Carmen Calvo

Carmen Calvo (Valencia, 1950) studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Valencia from 1965 to 1970 and at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts, also in Valencia, from 1969 to 1972. Between 1983 and 1985, she lived at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid and then moved to Paris, where she lived until 1992. Since then, she has lived and worked in Valencia.

Calvo’s works and objects encompass various materials such as wood, paint, objets trouvés and clay, which she has made iconic in her work. In the late 1990s, Calvo began to introduce photographic images into her work to create landscapes based on installations that, in Francisco Brines’ words, summarise her ‘salvific gaze’ on contemporary reality.
