Marina Abramović will show the work Four Crosses (2019) in connection with this retrospective from November 28, 2024 to January 5, 2025 in the Wasserkirche Zurich.
The four oversized crosses, which are presented tilted forward in the room, are among Abramović’s most visually dramatic works. In them, the artist depicts herself in various « good » and « evil » poses. The work refers to Christian iconography and poses the question of gender in a religious context: when is a woman considered good or evil? In the Christian tradition, women are depicted either as Mary – the good one – or as a dangerous seductress – the evil one. But what would happen if the woman were not only depicted, but also became the creator of the image? With the Four Crosses, Marina Abramović takes ownership of this image design and creates her own iconography.
The exhibition is supported by Wilde Gallery.
